By now you’ve probably seen the trailer and witnessed the slowly bubbling hype for Ubisoft’s Far Cry 5. The title is causing (for now) a small amount of controversy seeing as the antagonists are religious, gun toting Americans

On the setting and flavour of the game, Ubisoft said  “Welcome to Hope County, Montana. When your arrival incites the cult to violently seize control of the region, you must rise up and spark the fires of resistance to liberate a besieged community.  Freely explore Hope County’s rivers, lands and skies with the largest customizable weapon and vehicle roster ever in a Far Cry game. You are the hero of the story in a thrilling world that hits back with every punch, and where the places you discover and the locals you ally with will shape your story in ways you’ll never see coming”

The villains are an extremist religious, doomsday cult led by the eccentric Joeseph Seed, that threatens the community by targeting those seeking salvation after falling on hard times economically, making them ripe for the cult to exploit.  There is also a mysterious patron known as The Father who promises members of the cult that he will save them from the coming “Collapse”. Exactly what this collapse will involve is at this time unknown.

As for actual gameplay, according to sources at Kotaku, you will play as a deputy on the local police force, how you come to find yourself in Hope County is also not yet known but according to Ubisoft, you’ll cause quite a stir when you stroll in. Your character will be fully customizable and be well versed to drive all manner of vehicles including, planes and heavy farm machinery.

To build your resistance you can recruit, NPC’s and animals in what we guess is a similar style to Far Cry Primal’s animal companion system. As you progress in leading the resistance in Hope County, the cult will adapt to the threat you pose, becoming more resourceful and violent as you become more powerful and capable of taking them down.

More will be revealed by Ubisoft on June 12th at E3 with the game slated to release Feb 2018 and if you haven’t seen the trailer yet you can find it below.
